- Did you know that 5.6 Million++ Americans are living with limb loss and limb difference? The “plus-plus” acknowledges that the known estimate does not include everyone. The limb loss and limb difference community includes many talented people with remarkable journeys and stories. The @AmputeeCoalition aims to tell the stories, advocate for the needs, provide education, and support for people who have limb loss and/or limb difference. - The Amputee Coalition recently commissioned and published a study titled, “Prevalence of Limb Loss and Limb Difference in the United States: Implications for Public Policy”. Through collaboration with Avalere, an analysis of insurance claims data was analyzed to calculate and update the number of people currently living with limb loss and limb difference. In the United States there are 5.6 million++ people living with limb loss and limb difference, of those are nearly 2.3 million people living with limb loss and over 3.4 million people living with limb difference. The “plus-plus” of the 5.6 million++ figure acknowledges the study limitations. The claims analysis did not include individuals who are uninsured or covered by Veterans Affairs or TRICARE and is represented by the ++. Join the @AmputeeCoalition in spreading awareness. The last Saturday of April is “Show Your Mettle Day”, a day to empower individuals to show off their “mettle” (i.e. prosthetic devices, orthotic devices, wheelchairs, crutches, canes, etc.) This year, on Saturday, April 27, 2024, post a picture of you in your “mettle” and make sure to tag the @AmputeeCoalition.
