The man had his hand over his face when Lisa Sewell walked into the rehabilitation room. She carried her orange tote bag. She takes the bag to every visit.

The man was not having a good day, Sewell said. He was a double amputee, missing both legs. She could sense his skepticism in having another visitor. He did not want to hear the advice or the sympathy of someone who was not an amputee, who did not know what he was going through, she said.
