Amputee Coalition Policy Priorities

The Amputee Coalition is the only national non-profit representing the limb loss and limb difference community in Washington, D.C. As the independent, unbiased, evidence-based voice of people living with limb loss and limb difference, we work to improve care through advocacy, education, support, and prevention.

Our organization seeks input from the limb loss and limb difference community to shape our focus on public policy issues. Your voice can be heard through our annual Public Policy Issues Survey, in the Advocacy Community on AC Connect, or through email by contacting Government Relations at advocacy@amputee-coalition.org. Your engagement in advocating for policies that address the diverse needs of our community.

By sharing what policy issues matter most to you, the Amputee Coalition can use your input in our priority-setting process which is integral in creating a list of policy priorities and the Amputee Coalition’s Policy Matrix. The Amputee Coalition has two policy priorities that are the focus of our national and state-level advocacy work: empowering the limb loss and limb difference community and expanding equitable access to care.

Empowering Our Community

People who have limb loss or limb difference, their family members, friends, and health care providers are all part of the limb loss and limb difference community. The Amputee Coalition is committed to empowering the community we serve. One way we do this is through programs funded by the National Limb Loss Resource Center. Detailed information about this initiative can be found on the Federal Advocacy page.

Expanding Equitable Access to Care

Every person living with limb loss and limb difference or at risk of losing a limb should have access to the care they need. We understand that limb loss and the risk of amputations do not affect all Americans equally. African Americans are four times more likely to have an amputation than white Americans. The Amputee Coalition is committed to expanding equitable access to care. We work in coalition with our partner health organizations, top healthcare providers, cutting-edge researchers, and industry leaders to expand access to care for prevention, healing, rehabilitation, pain management, prosthetic care, and more to support recovery, reintegration, and long-term health.

The Amputee Coalition has two state-level priorities dedicated to expanding access to care and one national priority. Detailed information about these initiatives can be found on the State Advocacy and Federal Advocacy pages.

Amputee Coalition Policy Matrix 2024

Starting in 2023, the Amputee Coalition has created a Policy Matrix to display the most important public policy issues to the limb loss and limb difference community. The Policy Matrix is an accumulation of valuable ratings from people who have limb loss or limb difference through the Public Policy Issues Survey. The topics within the four quadrants of this matrix are where the limb loss and limb difference community has identified that the Amputee Coalition can maximize its influence on public policy.

The Amputee Coalition 2024 Policy Matrix is composed of four quadrants: Lead, Partner, Engage as Needed, and Monitor. The matrix is based on a scale that places issues based on the Amputee Coalition’s ability to influence change and the importance to the limb loss and limb difference community as key factors.
