Finding Local Healthcare Resources

August 2006

People with limb loss have particular information needs. Topic of the Month is a resource guide of information relevant to amputees. Click on the links below to access articles and Web sites directly. Many of the books and videos can be borrowed through Interlibrary Loan.

Books

Disability Services and Supports Directory: East Tennessee. 1998-. Nashville: Tennessee Disability Information and Referral Office, 1998-. This directory contains information on state and national agencies, and agencies by county. It also contains an alphabetical index to all agencies, with phone numbers. The actual listings for the agencies contain addresses, phone and fax numbers, e-mail addresses, and contact persons. Similar titles include Disability Services and Supports Directories for Middle Tennessee and West Tennessee. There are similar directories in every state. Health Groups in Washington: A Directory. New York, NY: National Health Council. ISSN 0278-5323. This directory helps the reader locate major, nongovernmental health and health-related organizations in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area.

Orthotics and Prosthetics Registry & Reference Guide / American Board for Certification in Orthotics & Prosthetics, Inc. Alexandria, VA: The Board, 2006 edition. A directory of the names of orthotic and/or prosthetic caregivers who are ABC-certified. Also included are the names of patient management facilities conforming to established standards of excellence in patient care. Search directory online at http://www.abcop.org

Pocket Guide to Minority Health Resources. Rockville, MD: U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services, Office of Public Health and Science, Office of Minority Health, 2003. A guide to minority health resources that includes: PHS minority health liaisons, state minority health liaisons, federal health information centers and clearinghouses, national minority organizations, sources of health materials, and colleges and universities.

ARCH National Respite Network and Resource Center. Chapel Hill, NC: ARCH National Respite Network and Resource Center, [199-]-. The ARCH National Resource Center began in 1991, as an initiative to promote respite services for families with children. The Center's Web site includes a National Respite Locator Service, downloadable respite factsheets, a list of upcoming conferences on respite and family support, and articles and respite resources for adults and seniors.

BenefitsCheckUp: A Service of the National Council on Aging. Washington, D.C.: The National Council on Aging, [200-]-. BenefitsCheckUp helps thousands every day to find programs for people ages 55 and over that may pay for some of their costs of prescription drugs, healthcare, utilities, and other essential items or services. It contains over 1,100 different programs from all 50 states (including the District of Columbia). On average, there are 50 to 70 programs available to individuals per state. In addition to identifying the programs that a person may be eligible to receive, BenefitsCheckUp also provides a detailed description of the programs, local contacts for additional information (typically the addresses and phone numbers of where to apply for the programs), and materials to help successfully apply for each program.

Produced by the U.S. Administration on Aging, this locator service helps identify local services for seniors and their caregivers. Searchable by state and ZIP code, results generally include a local Information and Referral agency, the Area Agency on Aging, and State Unit on Aging. These agencies can provide further information about local services available.

National Information Center for Children and Youth with Disabilities (NICHCY) : State Resources. Washington, D.C.: National Information Center for Children and Youth with Disabilities, 2001-. SHIPtalk: State Health Insurance Assistance Programs. The State Health Insurance Assistance Program, or SHIP, is a national program that offers one-on-one counseling and assistance to people with Medicare and their families. This site offers contact information and toll-free numbers for each state.

Shriners Hospitals Directory. Tampa, FL: Shriners Hospitals for Children [200-]-. Locate a Shriners Hospital with this directory. All children, from birth to 18 years of age, may be eligible for care at Shriners Hospitals if, in the opinion of their doctors, the child can benefit from the specialized care provided by their hospitals.  Eligibility is not dependent on financial need.
