People with limb loss have particular information needs. Topic of the Month is a resource guide of information relevant to amputees. Click on the links below to access articles and Web sites directly. Many of the books and videos can be borrowed through Interlibrary Loan.

Partnerships - Transportation Security Administration: Making the Skies Safe Once Again / Bill Dupes. Knoxville, TN: Amputee Coalition, 2004. Article from inMotion January / February 2004. A new agency, the Transportation Security Administration was formed after September 11, 2001. This agency has been involved in advanced training, which has allowed people with disabilities to begin seeing smoother travel than a few months ago. The Amputee Coalition and others are providing guidance in educating screeners about different kinds of prosthetic equipment.

Paddy Rossbach, RN and Amputee Coalition President, discusses the importance of caring for the skin of the residual limb and contacting your healthcare provider as soon as you have a problem. Most skin care problems fall into three categories: a poorly fitted prosthesis, improper hygiene, and allergies. Rossbach also recommends key items to keep handy in case a problem arises and you can't get to your doctor immediately, such as when traveling.
