The Amputee Coalition Needs Your Help to Continue Our Advocacy Efforts at the State and Federal Level!
Arms and legs are not luxury items, yet every month we hear from people who are having trouble getting the prosthetic care they need due to unfair, shortsighted insurance regulations.
Rick Castro’s daughter was born missing part of her arm below the elbow. He worries about how he will cover the expensive prosthetic devices she will need as she grows. David Ross lost part of his right hand and his right leg above the knee after he was mugged and thrown in front of a subway train. He’s seen what happens when amputees have to settle for devices that are not what they need because of the limitations in their insurance policies.
The Amputee Coalition of America (Amputee Coalition) is working hard to turn this tide. Already this year, we have worked with state activists to pass legislation in another seven states. We also launched a very tough fight in Connecticut to override the governor’s veto. Parity protections now exist in 17 states (AR, CA, CO, IA, IN, LA, MA, MD, ME, MO, NH, NJ, OR, RI, TX, VA and VT).
The Amputee Coalition has made tremendous progress at the federal level. In May, the House re-introduced legislation aimed at creating a consistent standard for prosthetic and custom orthotic coverage in private health insurance. We have also been active in the national dialogue on healthcare reform.
We need to raise another $300,000 this year to keep up the momentum behind our legislative initiatives. With your financial support, the Amputee Coalition will continue to succeed in advancing legislation to ensure that amputees have access to essential healthcare services.
We need consistent coverage of prosthetic care in all private and public plans. We must protect educational and employment opportunities. We are also committed to ensuring that public transportation is accessible to people with limb loss. Much important work remains to be done.
We are asking you to make a donation to help us continue to advocate on behalf of people with limb loss at the state and federal level. Whether you can give $25 or $2,500, your contribution will truly make a difference!
Your financial support of this effort will give voice to our commitment to ensure fair treatment for all people with limb loss. We are working hard to ensure that all amputees are able to reach their full potential. We hope we can count on you for your support.
