Get Involved: Current Research in Conjunction With the Amputee Coalition of America

Veterans Integrated Service Networks (VISNs)

In 2008, the Amputee Coalition of America (ACA) was awarded a subcontract from the Employee Education Service of the Veterans Administration (VA) to conduct three Train the Trainer seminars and three Peer Visitor seminars to incorporate peer visitation into the 22 VISNs (Veterans Integrated Service Networks) of the VA. This contract provides a paid membership in the ACA for each trainer and peer visitor. Separate funding will provide a corporate membership for each of the 22 VISNs. This project launches in 2009. We are currently in the launch planning stage.

Polytrauma and Blast-Related Injuries (PT/BRI) QUERI

The VA’s Health Services Research and Development Service’s (HSR&D's) Quality Enhancement Research Initiative (QUERI) works to improve the quality of healthcare for veterans by implementing research findings into routine clinical practice. The mission of the Polytrauma and Blast-Related Injuries (PT/BRI) QUERI is to promote the successful rehabilitation, psychological adjustment and community reintegration of individuals who have PT/BRI. The ACA is participating in a polytrauma project with the VA Puget Sound to develop peer visitor materials for veterans with polytrauma and their caregivers funded by the Polytrauma QUERI.

Langeloth Caregiver Project

The ACA received funding from the Langeloth Foundation to conduct a pilot study at Walter Reed Army Medical Center (WRAMC) on the effectiveness of peer visitation on caregivers of veterans with polytrauma and blast-related injuries (PT/BRI). The project is waiting for final protocol reviews.

PALS Plus

The Promoting Amputee Life Skills (PALS) Plus project is studying the impact of peer visitation vs. peer visitation paired with self-management on new (civilian) amputees. This is a joint project with the Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health and the University of Washington. PALS Plus is funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
