Youth Activities Program (YAP)
Youth Camp
The adventures of recreation,
playing sports,
and being accepted as a
kid with “skills” could be the stuff of dreams
for a child with limb loss or limb differences.
But the dreams become reality at
the Amputee Coalition of America’s Youth
Camp. Each year the ACA offers a summer
camp where young people with limb loss
can just be kids. While encouraging physical
activity, camaraderie and peer support,
the ACA camp addresses other significant
issues as well.
Building confidence and enhancing self esteem
early in life can inspire a child to
grow into an active, vital adult who embraces life to the fullest.
At ACA’s camp, young
people come to understand
that they are not alone and
that their greatest limitations
are those they impose
upon themselves.
Children spend four days
at ACA’s camp playing water
sports, hiking, bowling, swimming,
and building confidence
and relationships. They focus on
team-building through fitness games, learn
to cook and eat healthful meals to prevent
obesity, and improve their body image,
self-esteem and much more.
Leadership skills are introduced to
prepare campers to take advantage of opportunities in school and in their future
careers. The professional, certified staff
has created a camp experience that encourages
kids from ages 0 to 6 to overcome
their limitations and to have fun while
doing so.
