Commitment to Military Amputees
As our service men
and women return
home in need of
rehabilitative care, the
Amputee Coalition of
America is there to help. The ACA works
closely with Walter Reed Army Medical
Center and Brooke Army Medical Center
to ensure that military men and women
who sustain limb loss while serving our
country receive comprehensive support.
A large part of a successful recovery
process lies in discovering how fully one
can function after surgery. Since military
amputees are young and healthy prior
to their battlefield trauma, limb-altering
surgery potentially changes every facet of
their lives, including the opportunity to
return to active duty. The physical fitness
and endurance required of military
personnel only amplifies the difficult
changes they experience. The ACA
provides these young men and women
with peer visitors who have also suffered
an amputation as a result of their military
service.
Military in-Step, a guide to adapting to
limb loss, was developed by ACA in collaboration
with the U.S. Army Amputee
Patient Care Program and features articles
specific to treating and recovering from
blast-related amputations.
