Lobbyist
Many states elect to hire a lobbyist at some point in the campaign. It isn’t necessary, but it’s definitely helpful. You may choose to wait until later in the campaign. The expenses associated with having a part-time lobbyist vary from state to state. Talk to local organizations to determine the going rate in your area. It doesn’t hurt to start reaching out to potential lobbyists early in the campaign to figure out if this is a viable option for your group.
The ACA offers many resources for grassroots activists and direct lobbying and can act as a lobbying partner with your group.
Meetings
Most states have a professional association of orthotists and prosthetists. Your group may want to register to attend their annual or quarterly meetings. You may also consider attending a couple of conferences presented by other organizations to conduct outreach and spread the word.
Travel
Your group may need to travel to meet with legislators or conduct outreach. You may also want to supplement travel to specific individuals you invite to testify at the legislature.
Postage & Printing
You will need to print and send fundraising and outreach letters. You might want to print and distribute brochures or flyers. If you do an event, you will need to produce invitations.
Supplies
Every campaign needs the basics – pens, paper, etc.
Phones
You may be able to get phones and time donated by a supportive office or facility. You may need to reimburse group members for making calls on their own phones. Or you may elect to have a cell phone dedicated to the campaign where people can call for information and leave messages. This will also offer you a line with free long distance.
Volunteers
It is nice to include funding to purchase refreshments for volunteers, whether it’s for a night you are phoning legislators or for a lobby day.
Office Space
You don’t necessarily need to worry about standing space, although it’s helpful if you can get a small office or cubicle in a local facility or company donated to your group. If not, you will need to determine who in your group will be in charge of maintaining and storing files and records. And you’ll need to find places that will give you space for meetings. Libraries and local hospitals often have free space for the public.
