The 2005 Amputees Across America (AAA) ride is in the final stretch. Cyclists Bill Vanover, Jim DeLong and Joe Sapere will complete their ride when they arrive in Boston August 10.

Even though journey’s end approaches, the AAA riders are still working hard. This past week has included visits to hospitals in Pennsylvania and New Jersey, including the Shriners Hospital in Philadelphia.

At a visit in Reading, Pennsylvania, Luke Myers, 2005 AAA Junior Ambassador and below-knee amputee, spoke to the staff, patients and visitors about his experiences as a young amputee. Luke will ride with Bill, Jim and Joe for the rest of the trip.

Recent guests to ride with AAA or participate in the visitations include Jim DeLong’s brother Dan; Denny Chippolini, the founder of Generation Hope, an organization dedicated to inspiring and educating people of all ages to overcome adversity and accept diversity; and members of Amped Riders, which encourages amputees and those with related disabilities to skateboard, surf and snowboard.

Recent hospital visitations have also given the AAA riders the opportunity to meet and speak with several amputee support groups. These visits were especially important, because one of the AAA’s goals is to help establish a nationwide support network for amputees.
