After traveling nonstop since the June 5 start of the Amputees Across America (AAA) journey, the AAA riders (Gary Summers, Amber Johnson and AAA founder Joe Sapere) enjoyed several days of rest and relaxation in Canon City, Colorado.  Taking advantage of the break, family and friends of the riders were also in town for a visit, including former AAA riders James Thayer and Bruce Hibbett, and former Junior Ambassadors Chris Rhoades and Luke Myers.

Having crossed two deserts, the riders were cheered to see clouds as they rode through Colorado and Kansas.  The mountain altitudes and clouds brought cooler temperatures as well as a few rainstorms.

In the past two weeks, the AAA team has visited 10 facilities in three states, including the Scottish Rite Hospital for Children in Dallas, Texas.  Gary, AJ and Joe had the opportunity to participate in some great visitations as well as events such as the Wichita, Kansas leg of the Great American Race, a cross-country rally event for antique cars.

You can follow the AAA team’s progress by checking their travel schedule and reading their daily online journal at www.amputeesacrossamerica.com.  The next leg of their journey will include skydiving in Dallas and biking through Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama.

Leaving Colorado behind, the AAA riders enter Kansas with smiles. An audience estimated at 5,000 watches the AAA riders cross the Wichita finish line for the latest leg of the Great American Race, a 14-day classic car race from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to San Rafael, California.
