Pain is a growing concern among veterans. There are many injured people coming back from the war, as well as an increasing number of veterans moving into their senior years. In recognition of this, the American Pain Foundation (APF), a national, nonprofit organization, has begun an initiative to reach out to veterans who are in pain and provide them with information and support to improve their pain care, decrease their sense of isolation, and help them achieve a better quality of life for themselves and their families.

After surveying veterans, APF developed:

  • A special veteran-focused section of our Web site with resources and news for vets who have pain and their caregivers. (See www.painfoundation.org and click on the “Veterans and Pain” button.)
  • Specific online chats, dialogues and expert-led forums regarding veterans and pain in our online community: PainAid. See: http://painid.painfoundation.org.
  • Veteran information and stories in print and electronic newsletters.
  • Veteran voices online – sharing stories and wisdom about coping with pain.

If you are a veteran or a caregiver of veterans and would like to submit your story, write an article, suggest resources, suggest expert speakers, etc., please e-mail us at: veterans@painfoundation.org. Your thoughts, suggestions and support are greatly appreciated.

Feel free to participate in or observe APF’s next Online Chat with Dr. Chester “Trip” Buckenmaier III, MD, LTC, MC, Chief, Army Regional Anesthesia & Pain Management Initiative (ARAPMI) at Walter Reed Army Medical Center.

Date: 8:30 pm EST, Tuesday, October 18, 2005.

Topic of discussion: Pain as a Disease Process.

Instructions on registering to participate can be found at: http://www.painfoundation.org/page.asp?file=Veterans/VetChat101805.htm.
