With the evacuations now taking place along the Gulf Coast and Hurricane Katrina victims being sent throughout the country to Red Cross shelters, one ACA member support group decided to act locally.

William and Sherri Samuels of the Memphis Limb Loss Support Group contacted their local Red Cross and confirmed that there were amputee evacuees in poor health in Memphis. Though the numbers are unclear, there are evacuees at the Regional Medical Center at Memphis (the Med) who are being treated with tissue grafts, or revisions, to control the infections contracted either during the storm or on the way to Memphis.

What the Memphis Limb Loss Support Group is doing to help:

  • Making available to the Mid South Red Cross loaner wheelchairs and canes for evacuees
  • Looking for wheelchair accessible housing for evacuees as well as motorized scooters
  • Distributing 400 flyers to area shelters describing the type of support the group can offer
  • Visited the newest Red Cross Shelter at Dunn Elementary School and delivered ACA’s First Step and inMotion magazines as well as flyers
  • Talked with their local Red Cross and explained how critical it is that those facing amputee surgery receive peer visitations

What is currently needed?

  • Connecting ACA certified peer visitors with patients at the Med, to see what resources and referrals the victims need

The Memphis Limb Loss Support Group will also hold an ACA Certified Peer Visitor Training on October 9th. For more information on this training, please contact Susan Tipton at stipton@amputee-coalition.org or call toll-free 888/AMP-KNOW (888/267-5669).
