As Joe Sapere, Bill Vanover and various Amputees Across America (AAA) guest riders cross the nation’s heartland, temperatures soar into the 100s and the humidity edges higher and higher.  After a visitation in Colorado Springs, the group leaves Colorado’s comfortable temperatures behind and breaks out the water pistols as a fun way to cool down when needed.

The group has visited facilities in Colorado, Kansas and Missouri during the past two weeks.  At the Wesley Rehab Hospital of Wichita, they even had the opportunity to meet Miss Kansas!  Guest riders on this leg of the journey have helped keep everyone motivated.  Andrew Johnson, a previous Junior Ambassador, rode with the group in Colorado and participated in his first-ever skydive.  Luke Myers, a 2004 and 2005 Junior Ambassador and area resident, joined the team for its Colorado visitation. Luke will return later to ride the last leg of the trip.  James Thayer, a 2004 AAA alum, joined the group in Colorado through Wichita, Kansas, and Bruce Hibbett, a 2003 AAA alum, recently joined the fun in Topeka.

Amputees Across America has been getting great exposure throughout the trip.  The riders have not only had the chance to meet with the patients, staff and visitors at visitations, but they’ve also reached entire communities through local television, radio and newspaper interviews.  All the riders’ hard work really pays off when people can see that amputation doesn’t have to mean the end of great accomplishments!

Bill Vanover, Joe Sapere, James Thayer and Bruce Hibbett (l to r) are all together for the Topeka, Kansas, visitation.  The group represents a rider from every year that AAA has completed its transcontinental ride.

On June 24 at the Wesley Rehab Hospital of Wichita, Bill, Joe and James get to meet Miss Kansas 2005, Adrienne Rosel, while visiting patients.  Adrienne will be competing in the next Miss America pageant.
