Convening of Limb Loss Task Force Is a Step Toward Fulfilling the Amputee Coalition’s
2015 Five Year Plan

In May, the Amputee Coalition of America (ACA) convened the inaugural meeting of the Limb Loss Task Force in Washington, D.C., to develop recommendations that will serve as the roadmap to limb loss prevention and improved care for amputees across the country. This notable group of experts in limb loss – doctors, nurses, prosthetists, podiatrists, physical therapists, behavioral health experts and researchers from private and public sectors, the military and federal government, as well as amputees, including myself and Charlie Steele from the ACA Board – recommended a Four-Point Action Plan.

Four-Point Action Plan:

  • Implement a Blueprint for Limb Loss Prevention
  • Define national optimal care guidelines for amputees
  • Develop a national research agenda on limb loss prevention and amputation care
  • Create a model for amputee rehabilitation/community reintegration and early limb loss prevention to be implemented in hospitals and clinics around the country.

Inaugural meeting of the Limb Loss Task Force in Washington, D.C.Why is it important to have a plan? Not only do 507 people lose a limb every day in the United States, but this number is expected to increase and possibly double by 2050. Not having a plan to address limb loss prevention and to create the best care models possible for the growing number of amputees is simply unacceptable. The Task Force is developing a white paper to follow from its meeting in May.

The Limb Loss Task Force is one of the key initiatives of the ACA’s 2015 Plan. This 5-year plan is our internal roadmap to making greater impact on the lives of those affected by limb loss. We recognize that the ACA must better use its leadership role to advance limb loss prevention and quality of life issues for those living with limb loss/difference.

Over the course of this year, I will periodically provide a monthly update on the ACA’s progress on the 2015 Plan. I look forward to getting your comments.
