Mending Limbs Organization to Hold Second Annual Benefit Concert Event to raise awareness of need for adequate prosthetic insurance coverage for amputees	The Amputee Coalition of America (ACA) has been working hard to oppose the Health Insurance Marketplace Modernization and Affordability Act of 2005 (S. 1955), and we are excited to announce that this bill was defeated in the Senate on May 11! The cloture vote on Sen. Michael Enzi's bill failed by a vote of 55-43. It needed 60 to pass. It is, therefore, officially dead. The ACA will, however, continue to monitor this dangerous legislation and to work for real solutions to improve access to healthcare. Background on the Health Insurance Marketplace Modernization and Affordability Act of 2005 This legislation would have allowed companies to circumvent state coverage mandates, including parity bills that ensure coverage for the prosthetic limbs that amputees need to lead productive, independent lives. Many other insurance benefit requirements would have also been negatively impacted by this bill. Cancer screenings, diabetes supplies and rehabilitation are just some of the vital benefits that would have suffered. S. 1955 would also have allowed insurers to bypass state laws aimed at making healthcare more affordable for specific groups such as the elderly or people with disabilities – those with ongoing healthcare needs.
