This was a banner year for the Amputee Coalition of America (ACA) Youth Camp, held July 20-24. Sixty-three campers flew in from 30 different states to have the time of their lives. This was the camp’s first year at the Joy Outdoor Education Center, located just outside of Cincinnati, Ohio. The new facility offered new programs, including an adaptive ropes course, campfires and archery. One of the most popular activities was the zip line. Campers climbed a 30-foot tower and then rode the zip line down to the ground, almost as if they were flying. One camper exclaimed, “After going on the zip line, I know I can do anything!”

The camp also offered traditional programs, such as peer discussion groups, fishing, swimming and OPAF’s First Volley™. Monday night, Ohio Willow Wood, one of ACA’s corporate sponsors, hosted a carnival for the campers, featuring cotton candy, basketball, and great carnival games. Some of the campers even got to dunk me in the dunk tank!

Tuesday night, we held the traditional camp dance, a camper favorite. For the first time ever, we held a campfire. Groups performed skits, and we all sang songs. And don’t forget the yummy

S’mores! “Camp Joy worked closely with the ACA to address our campers’ special needs,” says

Outreach and Special Events Manager Vicki Foster. “Campers and counselors met the challenges of adjusting to this new facility, and all agreed 2008 was the best camp ever!”

Special thanks go to all the dedicated counselors, volunteers, individual donors and supporters of this program. It wouldn’t be possible without you. And thanks to the 2008 corporate supporters and donors: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, ASPIRE, Ohio Willow Wood and Otto Bock Healthcare.
