Eight visitations in the past two weeks have kept the riders busy! The Amputees Across America (AAA) riders have toured through Nevada, Arizona, and New Mexico and met lots of supporters at rehab facilities along the way. They’ve also been joined by several guest riders, including Jr. Ambassador Chris Rhoades, AAA 2002 alumnus John Keating and his two young sons, and riders from El Paso Corporation, a sponsor of this year’s ride.

Visitations have definitely been high points of the ride. The staff and patients at all the HealthSouth facilities have been welcoming. The AAA riders have visited with numerous patients and supporters, enjoyed a cake with their images on it, and shared encouragement with those presently going through rehab.

Regarding the actual bike riding, the riders have enjoyed some beautiful scenery – and some really nice downhill runs. They’ve been clocked coasting downhill at 45 miles per hour! The riders are having a great time, and each visitation helps motivate them to keep on going.

Thanks to everyone who has come out to support the ride! You can follow AAA by checking out their travel schedule and reading their daily online journal at www.amputeesacrossamerica.com.

The June 13 visitation at HealthSouth Rehab Institute of Tucson saw the day proclaimed Amputees Across America Day in the city. The ride to the facility included cyclists from the HealthSouth staff and a member of the city’s police department. Riders mingled with and encouraged patients going through rehab. At the Arizona HealthSouth Valley of the Sun visitation, Joe Sapere, Bill Vanover and John Keating talk with those attending. Topics discussed at visitations include experiences on the ride, dealing with insurance, staying positive during rehab, and prosthetic equipment.

John Keating, a below-knee and above-elbow amputee, and his two young sons join AAA. John rides a trike as he did during the 2002 AAA journey. The Keatings rode with AAA from June 9-14.

The visitations and going down a 30-mile-long hill were some of his most memorable experiences. On the way to Eagar, Arizona, AAA enters the mountains and some truly beautiful scenery. Here’s a breathtaking view of Salt Creek Gulch.
