The Amputee Across America (AAA) riders started off this year’s journey with a splash as they had fun wetting their tires in the Pacific Ocean before hitting the coast road toward Newport Beach, California. Joe Sapere and Bill Vanover were joined at the start of the ride by Bill’s daughter, Mandi, and Joe’s son, Jim. Support drivers this year are Joe’s wife, Janette, and Bill’s wife, Trish.

The 2005 ride “officially” started on June 2 with a visitation and kickoff celebration at HealthSouth Tustin, California. The Amputees Across America riders were warmly welcomed by HealthSouth patients and staff, members of the Functional Amputee Support Team and supporters Doris Austin, Will Krugman, Paige Looney (a bundle of energy and enthusiasm) and others.

Over the next two weeks, the riders will sky-dive at Perris Valley/Barstow, California, and make seven visits to HealthSouth rehabilitation facilities in Nevada, Arizona and New Mexico. Boy, do these guys get around or what! You can follow the riders by checking out their travel schedule and reading their daily online journal at www.amputeesacrossamerica.com.
