The Amputees Across America (AAA) riders, Gary Summers, Amber Johnson and Joe Sapere, are now enjoying time off a bicycle and relaxing in air-conditioned comfort.  They’ve earned a break, having ridden about 3,500 miles in 58 days.  It was a long, hot ride – but it was a wonderful experience they’ll never forget.

The last leg of their transcontinental itinerary crossed the Florida panhandle and ended at the Atlantic Ocean at Vero Beach.  This final section of the route included many days of high temperatures with stifling humidity.  But the visitations remained an oasis of uplifting patient visits – and air conditioning.

If you’d like to read the tongue-in-cheek recount of the AAA journey, read the 2006 daily journal at www.amputeesacrossamerica.com.  Founder Joe Sapere doesn’t rest for long. He already has a tentative route planned for the 2007 ride!

 Tallahassee Reception  Poolside  Vero Beach
A great reception greeted the AAA riders in Tallahassee.  Afterwards, the AAA riders spent time visiting with patients in the rehab area.

AAA riders spent a day poolside with the Tampa Shriners Hospital for Children.  The riders cheered on young competitors at the National Junior Disabilities Championships. Quite an inspiring day!

On June 5, the riders began at the Pacific Ocean.  After riding cross-country, they reached the Atlantic Ocean on July 31.  The riders celebrated their accomplishment with smiles all around!
