ACA Board Member Speaks Out About Diabetes

Charlie Steele, board member of the Amputee Coalition of America knows firsthand the devastating effects of diabetes.  His amputation was the result of diabetes. "This is one nasty disease," Steele told ABCNEWS.com. "It's painless and silent."

On Wednesday, December 19, 2007, ABC News reported on the increasing prevalence of diabetes in the U.S. and the rise in the number of diabetes-related amputations. The report states that 20.8 million Americans have been diagnosed with diabetes. More than 60 percent of all amputations are the result of complications from diabetes.

The article focuses on the importance of education in managing diabetes and preventing amputation. Steele went on to say that doctors and nutritionists should do a better job of persuading diabetics to maintain proper treatment. "They need to get in the face of diabetics and scare them straight," he said.
