At the Amputee Coalition, we are building a future where people with limb loss and limb difference live, work, and play without barriers. Our mission is to support, educate, and advocate for our community so that everyone impacted by limb loss and limb difference has the resources, connections, and opportunities to thrive.
Everything we do is guided by the principle: “Nothing about us without us.” This commitment ensures that the voices and experiences of people with limb loss and limb difference shape our work, policies, and impact.
Together, our leadership teams are committed to strengthening the Coalition’s ability to serve, advocate, and educate. We are working to expand services, build connections, and amplify the voices of our community—because every person deserves to live fully and without barriers.
Our Story
At the Amputee Coalition, we believe that no one should face limb loss alone. Together with thousands of supporters, we’re here to empower people with limb loss or limb difference—and their families and caregivers—by offering the resources and support needed to heal, adjust, and live life to its fullest. Based in Washington, DC, our caring network includes over 350 support groups and more than 1,000 certified peer visitors across the nation. Every month, we connect with thousands of individuals through our National Limb Loss Resource Center, dedicated peer support programs, and advocacy efforts.
Humble Beginnings
Our journey started back in 1986 when a small group of amputee support group leaders recognized a significant need: an organization solely focused on the challenges and opportunities faced by people with limb loss, their families, and healthcare providers. Fueled by volunteer spirit, these pioneers laid the foundation for what has become the Amputee Coalition—a leading national nonprofit committed to supporting and empowering those affected by limb loss and limb difference.
National Limb Loss Resource Center
In 1997, with the support of a cooperative agreement with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), we launched the National Limb Loss Resource Center (NLLRC). The NLLRC was created to offer programs and publications that help individuals return to active, meaningful lives. Today, a competitive grant from the Administration for Community Living (ACL) keeps our essential services thriving. We invite you to explore the Resource Center and discover how it can help you or someone you care about.
Resiliency Through Peer Support
We know firsthand that connecting with others who truly understand your journey can make all the difference. That’s why, in 1991, we started our certified peer visitor program—training individuals who have experienced limb loss to support newcomers with inspiration, hope, and practical advice. Now, with more than 900 certified peer visitors nationwide, our support is just a conversation away. Plus, our National Peer Support Group Network links you to over 350 community-based support groups, ensuring that compassionate, ongoing support is always close by.
Limb Loss Education & Outreach
Since 2003, our annual National Conference has been a beacon of learning and connection, drawing more than 7,000 participants from across the nation. This premier event brings together individuals with limb loss and limb difference, their families, and healthcare professionals to share knowledge, build networks, and find strength in the community. Because we believe in bringing education directly to you, in 2012, we launched Limb Loss and Limb Difference Education Days—programs designed to deliver high-quality educational content right to your local area.
Limb Loss Awareness Month
In 2010, we proudly named April National Limb Loss and Limb Difference Awareness Month—a bold move that has since grown into a worldwide celebration. This month is dedicated to recognizing the strength of those living with limb loss and limb difference and raising awareness about prevention. It’s a time for everyone to come together, learn, and support one another.
We’re here for you, celebrating every victory and with you through every challenge. Welcome to our community.
