In a recent meeting, the Amputee Support Team (AST) celebrated its 10th anniversary, and Dick and Barb Nickle were honored as founding members of the AST in 2000 and for 10 years of service with the AST. Dick was the first elected president of the AST. The AST support group was the idea of prosthetist Gary Reinhold and physical therapist Chad Kettler.

“I had just been put in the Plexiglas screening booth,” said Peggy. “My 4-year-old son was made to sit across from me, crying because they would not let him touch me. Everyone was looking at us. Then the TSA agent asked for my prosthetic leg. I knew they could wand my leg, but he insisted on taking it from me. And if that wasn’t humiliating enough, he asked for the liner sock that covers my residual limb, saying I had to give it to him. I felt pressured to give him my liner even though it is critical to keep it sanitary. I was embarrassed to have my residual limb exposed in public.”

Four-year-old Ezra Frech was born missing his left knee and fibula (the outer leg bone below the knee) and with a shortened left ulna (the inner bone of the forearm) and only one functional finger on his left hand. But look at him now.
