Formed in 1986, the Amputee Coalition is today the leading national nonprofit organization dedicated to serving the needs of people affected by limb loss or limb difference. Our mission is to reach out to and empower people affected by limb loss to achieve their full potential through education, support and advocacy, and to promote limb loss prevention.

Web Site

amputee-coalition.org

The Amputee Coalition wants you to have the information you need to take an active role in your healthcare choices and make the decisions that are right for you. In addition to detailed information on our programs and activities, our Web site offers fact sheets and articles of interest to people with limb loss and limb difference. The site also features online videos, podcasts, news and links to other resources. To become a Friend of our community and add your strength to our combined voice for positive change, please visit us online or contact our Resource Center toll-free at 888/267-5669.

Resource Center

Our Resource Center is the largest repository of limb loss information in the United States. Our staff provides free individualized answers for new and experienced amputees alike. We answer hundreds of questions per month on prosthetics, funding, support resources, and other topics related to limb loss. Call us toll-free at 888/267-5669 or ask your question through the "Ask the NLLIC" form on our Web site (amputee-coalition.org/forms/nllicask).

National Peer Network

The Amputee Coalition believes that contact with others with limb loss is crucial, especially for new amputees. Our National Peer Network has trained more than 1,000 people with limb loss who reach out to more than 3,000 new amputees annually. We can connect you with someone who's been where you are now – someone who understands what you are going through, who will listen and share strength. We can also help you locate a local support group (or start one) or contact others through our online forum.

Publications

Our award-winning bimonthly magazine, inMotion, has a readership of more than 160,000 and is the only national publication solely focused on the needs of the limb loss community. We also publish the highly regarded First Step – a comprehensive manual on adapting to limb loss – and several online newsletters.

Educational Events

For another unique networking experience, you may consider attending one of our regional or national events. Our 2010 national conference attracted approximately 800 attendees and offered educational tracks, entertainment, social events, clinics, exhibits and demonstrations of the latest limb loss products and technologies. Also in 2010, 100 children ages 10-17 with limb loss or limb differences experienced a 5-day traditional summer camp at the Amputee Coalition Paddy Rossbach Youth Camp.

Advocacy

The Amputee Coalition is already working on your behalf. Too many people with limb loss find their insurance companies offer little or no coverage for prostheses. In the face of this growing problem, the Amputee Coalition says, "Arms and legs are not a luxury." We have helped to pass laws mandating fair insurance coverage for prostheses in 19 states to date, and we are also working for legislation at the federal level.

Support Our Mission

The Amputee Coalition is a national nonprofit organization. We serve individuals affected by and at risk for limb loss and limb difference. Our ability to provide information, education and support to these individuals depends on funding from individuals, healthcare professionals and corporate partners. We need funding so young amputees can attend summer camp. We need funding to help those less fortunate attend educational conferences. We need funding to address the need for fair access to care for all people with limb loss. No gift is too small, so please give today by visiting our Web site at amputee-coalition.org.
